Ruakiwi Resevoir Investigation (Phase Two)

Ruakiwi Resevoir Investigation (Phase Two)

Ground Scan NZ was engaged by Hamilton City Council to carry out a detailed subsurface investigation for the Central City Reservoir project, part of the city’s long-term infrastructure investment to strengthen water resilience and supply reliability. The project, located near Hamilton’s water treatment plant, involves the construction of a new 22-million-litre reservoir to support future population growth and ensure a secure water network for decades to come.

Our team was tasked with enhancing the accuracy and reliability of existing utility data around the proposed reservoir footprint. While earlier locating works had identified key services, Hamilton City Council required these utilities to be verified and upgraded to Quality Level A (QL-A) standard — the highest level of accuracy as defined by the AS5488:2022 classification system.

Precise Utility Verification

To achieve this, Ground Scan NZ undertook a comprehensive program of hydro excavation and survey. Using non-destructive hydro excavation methods, our technicians safely exposed buried services including water, power, and communications infrastructure. Each utility was then surveyed using a high-precision robotic total station, capturing three-dimensional positional data to sub-centimetre accuracy.

This meticulous process ensured that all underground assets were located and recorded with the utmost precision, providing the design and engineering teams with confidence in the as-built environment before excavation and construction commenced.

Complete Project Management

Ground Scan NZ managed the project from start to finish — coordinating all aspects of the fieldwork including traffic management, engagement of specialist subcontractors, and on-site health and safety compliance. By handling logistics internally, we provided Hamilton City Council with a seamless and efficient service, minimising disruptions to surrounding roads and infrastructure during the investigation phase.

Our integrated approach ensured clear communication between all stakeholders and streamlined delivery within the project timeline.

Supporting a Resilient Future for Hamilton

The Central City Reservoir project represents a major step forward in ensuring Hamilton’s water network remains robust, sustainable, and future-ready. By contributing precise utility data and verified underground information, Ground Scan NZ played a key role in supporting the safe and efficient delivery of this critical infrastructure.

Accurate subsurface data is essential to reducing construction risks, avoiding costly service strikes, and enabling informed design decisions. The successful completion of this investigation demonstrates Ground Scan NZ’s ongoing commitment to providing high-quality, data-driven solutions that underpin safer and more efficient project outcomes across New Zealand.
